Waking Voice is “Bridgetown Vocal 2.0”
Originally established in 2008 by Daniel Weiskopf to bring cutting edge vocal training to singers and speakers of the Portland, Oregon, Waking Voice is the hub where barriers are broken and true vocal transformation is realized.  Waking Voice instructor Daniel has raised the bar with hundreds of voices in Portland and around the world over Skype.  The voice is not as elusive as most instructors make it, nor is it reserved for some mythical gifted subsection of the population that are “born with it.”  EVERYONE IS LITERALLY BORN WITH IT!  Daniel has a talent for breaking down vocal concepts into practical cause and effect relationships people can discover, explore, and apply.  Through scientifically proven exercises custom tailored to the student, any voice can be taken from “zero to hero.”  Singing is not a “talent,” it is a learned muscular coordination.

This is what Waking Voice is really about; discovery.  Discovering the undiscovered potential and the mystery of our vocal biology is how the voice starts to wake up.  While Daniel certainly continues to work with and accept experienced and professional vocalists as clients, what he is most passionate about is awakening people to their voices’ potential who have felt they either “can’t carry a tune” or don’t have a “good enough” voice.  The path to vocal mastery is about both vocal knowledge and one’s relationship with their voice, which is often blocked by beliefs, emotions, and a lack of informed practice.

“While charisma and creativity are not easily taught, I can teach ANYONE to sing, and sing well!”       (Daniel Weiskopf)

Instructor’s Biography:

Daniel’s path to vocal awakening was arduous. After more than a decade of navigating the conventional paths of “classical” vocal training and all sorts of choirs leading up to and through college, Daniel left McGill University’s school of music literally hating his own voice.  Conventional lessons made his relationship with his voice worse.  Feeling his voice was overly “proper,” he tried damage and “grit” to get some vocal personality, but that just led to damage and more limitations.  What he didn’t like about his voice was the over-compressed quality that comes from “classical training” which is really an over-emphasis of the diaphragm and too much air pressure.  Finally Daniel discovered there was another approach to vocal training that all his favorite vocalists used, from Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder, and found it was everything he ever dreamed a voice lesson could be; instant and REAL vocal refinement!  Cause and Effect vocal training.  Science based vocal knowledge.  His own voice became everything he always knew it could be.  Daniel became certified to teach this technique and share its gift, training in the same rooms that M.J. and Stevie had trained in with their teacher.  Bridgetown Vocal was born.

Several years later, Daniel wanted to discover more and went on a hiatus to explore his own voice more deeply, both figuratively and literally.  He started focusing on the more emotional, and energetic aspects of his voice as well as atypical vocal sounds used in various tribes (sometimes called “throat singing”).  He has taken the knowledge from his former network of science based voice teachers and boiled it down even further to where he gets vocal advancement in his students even more rapidly.  He is very compassionate about the psychological wounds we carry, specifically surrounding our voices, and firmly believes and continues to prove that ANYONE can sing well.  He easily develops voices that felt they were “tone-deaf,” as well as taking the seasoned or professional vocalist to the next level.  He wants to see vocal knowledge taught to the general population, because everyone deserves an optimal and close relationship with their voice.  Not everyone wants to be a singer, but we are all vocalists by default who should learn to use our instrument!

Waking Voice is dedicated to awakening everyone’s vocal potential, including those that don’t identify as singers. Too many vocalists use less than one-third of their range and ability, because of the false prevailing belief a singer is either born with “chops” or not.

Every voice–singer or speaker–is equipped to have 3+ usable octaves with *no* flips, cracks, or breaks!  If you are only comfortable using 1.5 octaves or less, you simply haven’t learned how your muscles work or what you are capable of!

Vocal training is not just for singers! In fact public speakers and actors should be training their full vocal range as much as singers do.  It is simply a matter of vocal health to have a balanced voice from top to bottom.  Singing is nothing more than sustained speech; if you speak you are a singer, and if you sing you are a speaker.
